Uses of Digital Media

This was the first Prezi I made at the start of the course highlighting 3 different types of digital media, all of which we used in the process of arranging, researching and filming our main project.

Market Research Questionnaires

We gave questionnaire's to student of our target audience (which is 15+ years old) to see their personal choices in films. From the questionnaire's we found that most people watch films 2-3 times a week and it is usually with another person. Also a lot of people said that they would not watch a film noir and this influenced our decision to change the conventions in our own film noir to make it more modern and less traditional to attract the younger audience.

Change to Original Storyline

The orignal concept for what was going to happen in our Opening Title Sequence has changed due to the recognition of new and more interestring ideas. The stalker in the original storyline has been changed to a hullucination in the Fem Fatal's mind, a relentless apparariton representing a past romance that would be revealed i n the rest of the film.

The scene featuring the Fem Fatal playing poker in a basment with various male characters has been cut completely to allow the scene with the imaginary stalker to flow more smoothly. It also seemed that the basment scene would add another, unecessary dimension of mystery to the new idea making the title sequence overly complicated. The voice over of the female characters thoughts have also been removed as it interrupts the creation of tension.

The end of the scene also no longer shows the Fem Fatal being shot, instead breaking down due to the stress of her mental state.

The location of the whole stalking scene has changed too, with a more suburban setting replacing the urban riverside site in an attempt to move away from conventions and show the Fem Fatal walking home.

Analysis and comparison of Neo-noir and traditonal Fim Noir

  • Conventionly, the plot of a neo noir is similar to that of a traditional film noir, centering around drama, crime, sex and seduction. The main difference between them being the time period in which they are set.
  • The main cast is usually limited to a protagonist or harrowed anti-hero and a villain although there may be more than one of each.
  • Heavy contrast lghting is used to emphasise dark and light and the colours tend to be monochrome.
  • Locations are urban and dens of vice have a large role in the mis-en-scene.
  • The sountrack in traditonal film noir is orchestral, slow paced and builds tension whereas Neo-Noir makes use of more electric instruments.

Research into the different uses of sound in Film Noir

'A sophisticated use of the sound track was a defining innovation of film noir, drawing upon techniques developed in American network radio. Network radio and sound film both began in the late 1920s, and by the 1940s, they enjoyed great success. It was not until then that Hollywood learned to use soundtracks in genuinely complex ways, rather than simply as adjuncts to image tracks. By then, network radio had developed writers, technicians, and actors skilled at presenting stories using sound alone; its popularity had accustomed listening audiences to understand complex layerings of sound. Radio narration went beyond linear, retrospective storytelling and employed dynamic interactions between narrating voices ("It all began last Tuesday when …") and dramatic ones ("Who's there?"). Sometimes the same voice narrated and participated in the dramatic action—a common trope in films noirs , which used sound to present two versions of a single character simultaneously.'

Its clear that non diagetic sound, and specifically narration was integral to early films of the genre in order to relay information that couldnt be shown visually, as well as maintaining the flow of events or setting a scene. Another pioneering convention that also appeared included the thoughts of a character being broadcast to the audience, giving their own opinions and interpretations of other characters.

          Roles Within Our Group

I'll be focusing on the use of diegetic and non-diegetic sound that could be used in our opening title sequence. This will include the soundtrack, sound effects and dialogue. Exploring with 'foley tracks' is also a possiblity.

Laura will be handling the mise en scene, deciding on what the characters will be wearing, the props that will be used, lighting possibilities and the location.

Anastasiya will sort out editing, choosing visual effects and transitions that signify or tie in with the film noir genre.
