- Conventionly, the plot of a neo noir is similar to that of a traditional film noir, centering around drama, crime, sex and seduction. The main difference between them being the time period in which they are set.
- The main cast is usually limited to a protagonist or harrowed anti-hero and a villain although there may be more than one of each.
- Heavy contrast lghting is used to emphasise dark and light and the colours tend to be monochrome.
- Locations are urban and dens of vice have a large role in the mis-en-scene.
- The sountrack in traditonal film noir is orchestral, slow paced and builds tension whereas Neo-Noir makes use of more electric instruments.
